Easy Recovery from Facial Cosmetic Surgery

Patients always ask; "How long does it take to recover?" I always answer; "It depends on what you mean by recover". Do you mean; "When will I be able to be up and around? or "When will I be able to return to work?", or "When will I be comfortable?", or "When will I be able to go out and nobody notices that I had any cosmetic surgery done?". The answers to these questions are all different.

The answers depend upon many factors including the abilities of your surgeon, the anesthetic drugs used and how you react to them, how easily you bruise, how easily you swell, your general health, the procedure you are having, how good you feel you must look before you go out in public, how good you must look before you return to work, and numerous other factors.

Usually you will have your normal energy back in a few days. But, you may have some bruising, which may last for several days to a few weeks. Bruising can usually be covered well with makeup, but some people do not want to wear makeup, and others do not care if their bruising shows. Recovery is a lot about attitude.

Today, the anesthetic drugs we use in our surgery center wear off so quickly that patients are awake, alert and ready to go home shortly after surgery. They are usually able to care for themselves at home without difficulty.

Many people expect to be bed ridden for several days after facial cosmetic or dental surgery. They are always happily surprised to find that they are up and around as soon as they get home after surgery. Because we use sedation drugs that wear off very quickly, people feel awake and alert shortly after surgery, but also feel very comfortable because we use long lasting local anesthetic drugs.

The local anesthetics last for seven to eight hours and taper off smoothly. Because of the very effective local anesthesia, we can use very light general anesthesia, so it is not necessary to have a breathing tube, known as an endotracheal tube, inserted for general anesthesia. If soreness develops as the anesthetic wears off, mild pain medication is all that is needed. At most, patients take only a few pills for discomfort on the first day, and then find that they are very comfortable without any medication.

We always discuss the recovery process in detail with all of our patients and help them to plan the most effective, comfortable and rapid recovery.

Lip Reduction

Lip Reduction is a popular procedure among people who have larger than average lips, which may overshadow their other facial features. Lip Reduction procedures are used to increase the aesthetic appeal of your face by making your lip size and contours harmonize with your other facial features. The procedure, which removes excess tissue from inside the lip provides a permanent improvement in the lip size and contour.

How can eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) make me look younger?

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) rejuvenates the face by removing the excess fat and sagging muscle around the eye that creates an aged appearance. Dr. McBride performs upper blepharoplasty to remove excess skin of the upper eyelid that contributes to a droopy, tired look. Lower blepharoplasty is used to eliminate bags underneath the eyes. Often, individuals will have eyelid surgery to compliment the results of a facelift or browlift (forehead lift).

My ears stick out, what can I do?

Several procedures are available for altering the shape or size of the ears. Some ears protrude out too much and require the ears to be set back closer to the head. Other ears are too long or some earlobes are overly redundant. Other people suffer from torn earlobes often because of wearing pierced earrings.

Prominent, protruding or poorly shaped ears can be flattened, and contoured to a more elegant form with ear reshaping surgery. The cartilage in the ear is responsible for its shape. The cartilage is flexible and elastic so it can be bent but will return to its original shape. By altering the amount, thickness or shape of the cartilage, the contour of the ears can be permanently improved.

Computer imaging is usually performed before ear reshaping so that you can see what changes are possible. This helps you see exactly how you want your ears to look, and it helps Dr. McBride determine the best technique to achieve your cosmetic goals.
