Ear Gauging Reversed with Cosmetic Surgery

Ear gauging is a procedure that gradually stretches and widens the ear lobe so it has a hole that may be larger than a quarter. This trend seems to be loosing its appeal, and now, more people who have gauged their earlobes are looking to have it reversed and are turning to cosmetic surgery for help.

Those looking for jobs, planning to join the armed forces, or seeking a change in their life, may find that the large ear lobe hole is interfering with their plans. As a result, we are seeing more young patients who gauged their ears as teenagers, but now seek to have normal ears again.

Surgery to repair the stretched lobe is done in the office under local or sedation anesthesia. The surgery is simple and the recovery is rapid. The skin around the inside of the hole is removed and the cut edges are realigned and sutured to restore the normal contour. The lobes typically heal very well with minimal to no scaring. There is usually very little discomfort. After healing for a few months, the ears can be pierced so regular earrings can be worn again if desired.
